AFAIK it just expands the aliases, i.e. calls expand-abbrev, before trying completion, but it does nothing else. `bbdb-complete-name' has troubled us regularly when trying to add new features, so I dare hacking it and actually I do not have any time left at the moment .... Try `dabbrev-completion' or write your own function and supply a patch ...
