Thanks for the explanation. 

Maybe there should be a pointer of some sort in the info file of
bbdb Gnus Summary Buffer mentioning this `side effect'?

Just adding something like: 

`:' invoked from the summary buffer this function will also
snarf/grep/fetch/put/(...) the current sender into your ~/.bbdb
file.

might do the trick. Comments?

Or a combination of `bbdb-snarf' (which only works if the cursor
is placed somewhere near an email address in the
_article_buffer_) and `show-sender'...
