Have a look at EUDC (Emacs Unified Directory Client) if you're
interested in doing this. I've not looked at it myself for a long time
so I don't know if it's still a going concern, or what it supports,
exactly, but I do know it used support both BBDB and LDAP.

Changing BBDB's backend is something I've experimented with, but it's
non-trivial - you need to make a LOT of changes to bbdb.el to make it
fly.
