You are right, the current code is probably quite old and not really up to date anymore. Your patch is more substantial, I need to look at it more carefully. Before incorporating such a more substantial patch into BBDB, I'd appreciate if you could please assign the copyright for your work on BBDB / Emacs to the Free Software foundation.
