BBEdit stores your file-specific preferences in local storage in your home 
directory though it can be changed with one of those secret settings so that 
resource forks are used.

The idea is that different users may want to employ their own preferences for 
the same file in a multi-programmer environment.

It all works on the file name. If you copy the file with a cp command to a new 
name the preferences will be forgotten and your new defaults applied. It might 
also work if you just change the name slightly behind BBEdit's back using 
Finder or a shell.

Remember that those old files really do have the spaces in them. You might be 
faced with an "entab" kind of operation and that is likely to create sequential 
tabs that you don't want.
