I have BBEdit version 8.2.6 running on Mac OS X version 10.4.10. For a text file of any size, if I do "Text" -> "Educate Quotes" from the main menu without first selecting (highlighting) at least one character in the file, BBEdit takes me to the end of my file after educating the quotes. This is annoying. To get back to my original line, I either have to set a marker or (more simply) remember where I began the function so that I can return to the line after educating quotes. However, if I select one or more characters before educating the quotes, my pointer stays on the highlighted character, line or block after educating the quotes. In other words, my pointer position does not move if I've selected some text.

It's worth noting that most other functions found under the "Text" menu don't move the pointer after performing the function. For example, if I do "Text" --> "Remove Line Breaks" from any line in a file, my pointer stays on that line after performing the function -- even though the entire file is affected by removing the line breaks [since no character(s) were selected]. This is as it should be, IMHO.

If I go all the way back to BBEdit version 7.1.4, Educate Quotes doesn't move the pointer after educating quotes -- my pointer "stays put" on the line where I was when I began the function, even if I didn't select any text. I believe this should be the default behavior for this function.

Why did you change this aspect of Educate Quotes after version 7.1.4, and are you going to fix it so that the pointer no longer moves after educating the quotes?

FWIW, the current behavior of the pointer after doing Educate Quotes is the one thing that has kept me from upgrading to a later version of BBEdit.
