I probably didn't explain the example too well. I'll use your example..
If I position the cursor on line 1 column 8 and type 'foo' I
will now be on line 1 column 11. If I use the arrow keys to move
down two lines I will be on line 3 column 11 i.e taking you to
the column I just left as you say.
Ideally I would like to move to line 3 column 8 i.e. the point
where I last started typing.
