I have always had a "scratchpad" of sort, a blank document that I never saved. That this autosaves is really nice as there have been times when I wished I could go back and get something I had thrown on the scratchpad.
As for syntax coloring, I am not sure that could work at all. I have a mixture of php, javascript, perl, css, and now even a bit of python.
