Dennis,

Not a solution to "just not do it". What an absurd thing to say. I am
not clicking a line number, I am clicking in the left margin, which
USED to just select the line to the right of the cursor.

I have used this feature since I can remember. At least since version
5 (I have been using BBEdit since v.3). Actually, there are several
things that have changed with v.9.x that are extremely annoying, and I
may just be looking for a new text editor if there aren't ways to
regress the ne "Options" to their previous states.
