It allows you to search a folder of files and compare them to another folder of files and shows you the differences between them. So, when a new version of WP comes out, you download it and compare it to your version using Find Differences and then apply your changes as needed. And from my experience you can do pretty much anything in WP without modifying the core files, might be something worth looking into to minimize the possibility of error in your situation. Good luck!
