I was never really aware of that behavior. But that’s probably because usually I select (⇧⌥⇠) and then delete. (Maybe the behavior of BBEdit’s ⌥⌫ is the responsible for that habit ;) )
I don’t see any advantage in BBEdit’s behavior. When I want to delete a space after a word I can just delete without Option. ATM the only thing that occurs to me, where BBEdit’s behavior makes sense, is when you have multiple spaces after a word, and you want to delete them all: aword*A*·····[<cursor] (The middle dots represent spaces) - With BBEdit it takes one keystroke of ⌥⌫ to delete from the cursor position up to A. - With TextEdit it takes 5 keystrokes of ⌫, since you can’t use ⌥⌫ here (it would delete also the word).
