>Any idea where to get some cisterns, etc. pretty cheaply?

Check around old farm buildings. They all had them in our area until
the recent era. My house in Shepherdstown (circa 1790) came with a
huge one, that's still serviceable. Your ol' dad uses it to water his
garden. Of course, back in the day, a good rain would come before the
cistern was empty. If last summer was any indication (or this
winter!), a person should think of tripling the size of the cistern.

they tell me that a good farmer will not use water mined from the
aquafer but will make every effort to use or hold every drop that
falls on his land.

I'm also purchasing one of those pike lab meters for determining if
and when my plants need water. I think I really set back food quality
and plant longevity last season for priding myself on how deep into
waterlessness my crops could go without wilting. Strangely, the
stresses showed up in other ways.
