For more than a quarter of a century, Donna Henes, New York City’s own urban
shaman has been ushering in the spring season with her world famous egg
balancing event, Eggs On End: Standing On Ceremony. She has held these
vernal
equinox celebrations all over the city, from the United Nations to the South
Street Seaport, but the World Trade Center was the site that hosted the eggs
most often. For 18 years, thousands upon thousands of workers and tourists
stood their eggs up on the black marble fountain in the plaza at the Twin
Towers, an urban Stonehenge.
This year, the National Museum of the American Indian of the Smithsonian
Institute has stepped forward to offer Henes a new home for her 27th annual
Vernal Equinox Celebration. At 1PM Wednesday, March 20, Henes, accompanied
by
a parade of well-wishers decked out in bells and decorative banners will
carry a large basket of 360 eggs in a colorful procession from the World
Trade Center site down Broadway to the steps of the Museum at the Old
Customs
Building at the lower tip of Manhattan Island.
The on-site celebration will begin at 1:45PM with a ceremony and
a lively countdown to spring. At 2:16PM the gathered crowd will stand the
Eggs on End. According to an old Chinese custom, balancing an egg at the
first moment of Spring, you will have good luck for the rest of the year.
"Now more than ever, people in our city are seeking a sense of balance and a
way to connect with each other and the greater universe around us," says
Henes who has been dubbed the Unofficial Commissioner of Public Spirit of
New
York. "We are all looking forward to the re-birth of Lower Manhattan and a
regeneration of our spirit and our desire to live in peace. The egg
represents birth and new life. It is a very positive, optimistic symbol and
it is universal, recognized by cultures world wide."
