Stephen: In his lectures on bees, which have just been reprinted, RS says in brief, that formic acid is essential to the vitality of flowers and that the flowers in fact take in the formic acid from the bees, ants and wasps. Read the book, I guarantee you'll never regard bees the same again. David C
