Subject: The Perils of BSE

"I bear a message from the Gods," the Shaman said bluntly, taking a can
of beer from the fridge and handing it to his housemate.

"Gods? You haven't been at the moonshine again, Bill, have you?" the
Chief asked, flipping the ringpull.

"Would that I had, George. Four o'clock this morning it was when they
arrived, a squaw, a young brave and a doddery old man, all dolled up to
the nines in ceremonial gear. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Or
the other place, maybe." Sucking noisily, he finished his own beer and
tossed the can into a waste bin.

"So what did they say?"

"That with the spread of BSE, in the world to come there will be no
horned animals, domestic or otherwise."

"Whaaat?" For the first time, the Chief showed real interest. "But . .
but how will we make BD500?"

"You took the words right out of my mouth! Improvise, they said, find
another way. We have time, apparently."

"How much?"

"I'm not sure. I think the old man said a quarter of a cycle but I don't
know what he meant."

"A cycle is 50 years, it's in the family record. Once there was another
planet in the Solar System and that was the length of time it took to
orbit the Sun. So we have twelve and a half years to find an answer. Not
long really." George put his empty can down very gently on the table..
"Did you pay the power bill yesterday, by any chance?"

The Shaman nodded, Yes. "That reminds me. There won't be any of that
either."

"What?"

"Electricity. Or natural gas. Or oil."

"Better get to work then, hadn't we?"

"One thing I've always wondered, George, is why BD500 is called that. I
mean, were there 499 failed attempts, and if so, would the research help
us today?"
