One faint glimmer of hope: the Supreme Court of Canada last week refused to allow the patenting of the Harvard mouse - no patents on life forms. I haven't read the decision, but it may help to restrain some of this biotech in years to come.

Schmeiser's appeal will come to the Canadian Supreme Court in the
near future. The issue there will be the protection of a patent
already extended to a lifeform, will it not? It will be interesting
to see how it comes out at that level. -Allan
