There is nothing wrong with using ifconfig with no options or switches. If
the device is not listed from Just "ifconfig" then it is most likely not
configured.

@Robert, You know, making short quips about how "x.y.z doesn't work", and
then giving us no information as to what you've done to try and get it
working - Will not help any one help you.
