In the end I was able to use kernel 3.8.13-bone69 with 
image console-armhf-2014-12-19-2gb. I created the deb files and was able to 
install them.

What not worked was to copy the new kernel to the sd card using the 
script tools/install_kernel.sh. I assume the reason is that the script is 
expecting a sd card with two root partitions (one with /boot/uboot, one 
with '/'). The new image has only one root partition thats why it does not 
work I think.
