You really should upgrade to a newer version of perl-5. There were several
maintenance releases of perl-5.8.x culminating in perl-5.8.9 (and which
involved fixing many bugs including some security-related ones), and
perl-5.10.x, perl-5.12.x, perl-5.14.x, and most recently
- perl-5.16.0 - were all released since then with many improvements. All
version of perl 5 from perl-5.12.x and below (inclusive) have been End-of-lifed
(EOLed) and should note be used.

You won't get a lot of sympathy from us for using such an ancient and
potentially broken version of Perl, and will be less likely to get help until
you have upgraded.
