I do not think your assertion is correct. You see $0 is the name of the parent program, and $1 ......$9 the name of the arguments to $0. You can modify the arguments ($1 .. $9) but not $0. The only way you can modify $0 is to start a new program. If you could include a copy of your program, that will help.
