Thanks for the Perl downgrade suggestion. It appears to get me back to where I think I was the other week. I hope someone will mention when Perl is fixed in this respect.
As far as patching is concerned, I am not in a position to try that right now, though it sounds like a good idea. Is it likely to make it into the code? I notice you only just came up with it.
