Is this true just when running against sub-directories of the main music directory, or for all runs with the "--rescan" flag (find new and changed)?
I've tested it on a few directories. All had external artwork. None were Various Artists collections. No deleterious effects noted on general performance. Artwork appears in the web UI.
I wouldn't want to build a whole library this way, but it sure is nice for immediate play. Given Dan's comments, it sounds as if it would be best to follow up with a full scan when there's time to do so.
