What did you do to change the buffer settings ?
If you changed a settings in the Softsqueeze settings dialog box then
it is stored in the Java prefs.xml file under this line

Perhaps Softsqueeze was run from a different userid and so the Java
preferences are elsewhere.

Depending on the audio format being played - the softsqueeze player
might require transcoding which hardware player do not.
