@Brecht: Well, If for nothing then for aesthetics. Without a gap,
panels are looking merged (that's why I "propose" to create one big
panel). To be honest, I would like to see old borders around panels,
Non transparent BG and shadows behind panels, but I'm afraid I'm
asking too much.
