Hi all,

Wanted to bounce an idea around here, which I'll repost in BGG forums
proper later. I run a small startup game development studio and we're
considering pitching the following concept:

An online platform for the digital purchase and online play of
(licensed) popular boardgames. We'd build a platform which allowed
people to sign up, and buy into a copy of their favourite game. We'd
recreate these games in simple 2D format, using original artwork, to
be played over the net in real time, or over the net in a turn based
system (where appropriate). Perhaps even singleplayer vs AI mode.

Now, as a boardgame lover I understand that this mode of play will
never, ever equal the actual purchase and enjoyment of gathering
around a table. It is NOT intended to replace that. As a boardgamer, I
also understand sometimes I'm at home and I just WANT to play, say,
Puerto Rico. I can't play on my own, I can't even, really, play with
just a single sibling or partner and I can't organise a group
gathering. Under the system, I could log in, find a game with players
of my skill, not worry about preparation or rules and have a quick
game.

Obviously all games would be licensed from their respective owners.
For the sake of discussion, lets assume that can be done and is not an
issue. What is of interest is an appropriate business model. Does one
person by a copy of the "game" which he can then host tables for 3-5
(or whatever) other players? Or do all players pay a small one off fee
to access all online matches of one game. Do we have a subscription
model where players can play any game they want? I imagine a
combination of the last two is the best option.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks in advance for your considered criticism and comments!
