I decide to contribute to a community in boredom by posting a thought
provoking question. =p

Sooo.. apparently I'm going through a cycle this past year. First I
started buying the 'lighter' games like Thebes, Carc, yspahan, Manila,
TTR, etc and subsequently found them to be too light. I then started
getting the longer/heavier games like El Grande, Puerto Rico, Shogun,
Age of Empires, Agricola, etc.

However! our gaming sessions far more often consist of people who
prefer the lighter games. The heavy games hit the table far less than
the lighter ones. However there's something else that they are looking
for: tension.

When I think about it, some of the hits in our house are:
Settlers
Manila
Thebes
Vegas Showdown
Fearsome Floors
Kingsburg
Stone Age
Pillars of the earth (although this reach the heavy side)

Apparently, Carc, Yspahan, and even Dominon are not considered as fun
eventhough they are relatively easy! After some thought my guess is
that my friends deemed that these games lack the sense of tension that
the other ones have. This sense of tense makes us think that what's
going to happen matters. In Settlers & Stone age there's tense in not
knowing how many resource you will get in a round. In Manila there's
tension in those final rolls. In Thebes there's tension in the digs.
Vegas Showdown has some tense auctions when some people go after the
same tile. In Fearsome floors there's tension before the monster
moves. In Kingsburg there's tension in winter. PoTe has tension in the
final stages when all the scores are close and you need to pull-off
that incredible play to spear ahead.

So far I'm thinking to get: Wasabi, Cash n Guns, and Pandemic (not
sure about this one.) So there you have it. I need short+tense+fun
games. Which games would you guys recommend? What's fun/tense about
it?
