I asked Aldie about this a few days ago, in the "scheduled downtime" forum announcement.
He said BGG is a enterprise-scale operation running on a shoe-string budget, and the downtimes are due to insufficient staff and hardware to run the site any other way. But the current maintenance should increase site uptime in the future - they're installing a backup database or something. It seems to me BGG continues to take steps to increase its revenue, so I hope the downtime issue will get better in the future.
