You can't read the name as a string.  It's an alias stored as NSData,  
and probably completely useless unless you write a program that  
converts it to a file reference (FSRef, path, URL).  We use a class  
called BDAlias to do this, so you can rename/move the file apart from  
BibDesk and it will still work.

The result of "Last Open FileNames" is an array of dictionaries, with  
filename and alias objects.  I'm not aware of a way to read this  
directly through the defaults command.

I can help you write a new shell tool to read these, if that's  
acceptable, but keep in mind that these preferences have changed in  
the past and may change in future.
