It isn't exactly what you asked for, but I wrote a program that will  
read the recently opened files from any application, returning them as  
paths.  Minimally tested source is available at 
http://homepage.mac.com/amaxwell 
  as readRecentFiles.zip.  Run it in Terminal to see a usage summary.
