Well, using TextEdit doesn't help. This problem has persisted across  
various reboots and shutdowns; but I will make a note of trying it  
again after the next one. I wonder, is there a cache somewhere that  
could be cleaned out? This seems to be a general solution for many  
random and otherwise inexplicable problems.
