I used a variety of lighting systems during that time. The one that was constantly troublesome was a Union bottle generator system that ran the headlight and taillight (used 1980-1985). Not only would it slip like crazy in the wet, but it often lost electrical connection. It was so bad, it soured me on generators for a long time. I spent 15 years or more with rechargable battery systems. The lights never failed and the electrical connections never failed, but the batteries did. And, as the batteries aged, they'd hold less charge and I'd often end up with the light going out at the very worst part of my commute. By 2000 or so, I became aware of the hub generator systems the randonneurs were using, and switched to a generator powered system.
