I've used the Union's pictured in the link another published.  I've
found it quite reliable.  I've used it them on fully fendered bikes
with no problems.  One bike has a braze on for a shift lever to 
control the generator, but the other used the remote control that
comes with the generator.

I like it much better than any bottle generator.  It's about as quiet
as a hub generator.

Never used it in snow.  I switch to a hub generator for the winter.
The Union has adjustable tension against the tire.  I never had one
slip in HEAVY rains.  I would guess it would work in light snow,
but I don't know how it would handle that heavy slushy stuff that 
sticks to everything.
