Your description sounds like you want bar ends on flat bars, a common
addition for just the reasons you mention. There are numerous handlebar
mirrors out there that either clamp onto the bar or plug in, and should work
on a bar end handlebar extension piece.

Try the bigger on-line stores: Performance, REI, Nashbar, etc. if you can't
find anything at your LBS.

One of the downsides to handlebar mount mirrors is vibration. For years,
I've used small mirrors that mount to either eyeglass frames or the helmet.
The mirror is close to your eye so you get a great field of vision. You
only need to move your head a bit to cover a wide angle behind you. We
unconsciously hold our head fairly still so there's very little vibration to
the mirror. There's lots of commercially available versions & a
particularly good eyeglass mount from Colorado Cyclist.

Subject: {BL} Bar End Handles and Mirrors

Until very recently the only kind of bike I had ridden, as an adult, was a
road bike with traditional drop bars. I recently acquired a commuter bike
with straight (mountain bike?) bars. There is really only one hand position
on this kind of bar and I'm still getting used to it. I've seen bar-end
handles/grips by a number of maufacturers like Cane Creek and Ergon which
look like they can provide alternative hand positions. What I would like to
try is a version of these things that can also accomodate a bar-end mirror
on the left. It would be simple enough to design such a thing - all you
need is a handle bar plug on the left grip. So far, however, I've been
unable to find anything like this. Ideas?
