Well--the salmon is softer--so it lets road crud go instead of
sticking, but if you set your pads with a decent amount of toe it
effectively does a similar thing--if you pick up a bit of metal at the
beginning of the braking cycle, as the whole brake pad surface isn't
engaged with the rim, it can let the bit of metal go.

Sounds like utter BS--but that's what I've found helps, with setting
up brakes to work in pretty grim urban conditions. Yes, salmon pads
are softer and are great--but overall Kool-Stops are far better than
Shimano and Avid, and the toe-in is just as vital a component in the
embedding of crap as is the block compound.

I run black inserts on DA holder on my fixed gear and they've never
picked up junk, my old SS ran grey Continentals which I can't remember
ever getting any junk either, and when I used classic black Eagle II's
with a good amount of toe in ice-bike conditions, I'd have to pull out
a rock or bit of junk monthly.
