Why's that? I have a fixed that I often ride on the street, either
with spds on a nice 40 mile weekend jaunt, or with some MKS Sylvan
Tour flats--without toe clips even! I find it as safe or even safer
than a geared bike for an experienced rider, of course, as it keeps
one at attention at all times. I do run front and rear brakes--
although I trim speed with my legs, I think that running a single
brake is a bit optimistic. Running a fixed gear with none at all--that
of course, is a disaster waiting to happen. ;-) At any rate--I've been
fixed gear road riding for a long time--and it's never given me a
scare at all, you just have to be a little more deliberate. It's not
the sort of bike you take out and gab with your friends on. (though I
probably could ;-))

As for the OP's QR skewer--if it's steel, it's good enough for fixed
gear. It was good enough back in the 80s to hold your hub in the semi
horizontal drops right?
