Hey David, I've been using Silver Shifters with a 9 speed cassette and don't really have too many problems. I guess I'm just used to it.
The deal is that I have a Surly CC that I'm going to put Nitto Albatross bars on. I have 9 speed Shimano barend shifters on it now, set to friction, that work well enough with 9spd. I know that the Shimano barend shifters can be mounted on the ends of the Albatross bars but I'm thinking of going with DT so as to make bar changes that much easier. We'll see what happens. I may just order up some Silver DT shifters from Rivendell. They're cheap enough.
