Great set of posts, all. I am not sure that I am comforted to know
that so many others have suffered similarly. I wish we could make
U.S. drivers behave like north european drivers, at least I have heard
that they are very polite to cyclists in places like Holland and
Estonia. But, I guess I had a good run of years without an accident.
I have been on the roads since about 40 years now. If I can go
another 40 'til my next (I am 52 now), that should work out pretty
well.

By the way, the first name of the husband of the woman who hit me is
Jamsran. I googled it. Means "God of War" in Mongolian. Maybe I
have bad kharma?

I just got the good news from my orthopedist today that I can start
cycling again. Easy -- on smooth roads. Given that greenlight, I
decided the fastest way to get back on the road would be to just have
the Surly Cross-Check repaired. I hope to be back on the roads before
Christmas. I also had my first physical therapy today. Quite
pleasant really.

I really like the blinky helmet lights idea from SocialBlunder and the
idea of the dental pick for winter brake pad cleaning from Paul.

Regarding MichaelH's comment, I am thinking of doing a no-sleep trip
next summer from Washington to Pittsburgh along the new bike trail and
towpath. 305 miles through the mountains. I figure I might to be
able to do it in 30 hours if I had some way of staying lit all night
long. Already did Cumberland to DC in a day this past Midsummer's
Day. Great fun, but I am looking for the next big target.

I am going to have to look for a jacket like Cheesy describes.
