I will not be seeking re-election for alder. I was going to write a nice
press release, but decided not to bother. I held off an announcement while
I spoke to people in my district that might be interested in running.
However, one reporter finally made me confirm the rumors, so I felt I should
let everyone know at the same time.

There are things that I want to do personally and professionally that I feel
I can't do while serving on the Madison Common Council.

What? Travel, for instance, both for work and for pleasure. Have time for
some new projects. Go to dinner on Tuesday nights. Go for bike rides on
summer evenings without checking my calendar.

Serving on the Council has been a great education, immensely satisfying, and
a huge honor. I have gotten wonderful support from so many people, both in
my district, and the city at large. It is very gratifying to be part of the
decisions that affect the citizens of Madison, both present and future.

Don't worry, I'm not going away, and I intend to still be part of the
process to improve bicycling, walking, transit, and other sane
transportation options in Madison.

The biking community in Madison, the energy, the knowledge, the sheer
numbers of people, is truly something you should be proud of. We all need to
continue to speak out for what we want. As anyone who has been involved in
local politics will tell you, a few people can make a huge difference, so
don't ever think your voice doesn't count. Just because one, two, or even
many battles are lost does not mean that your efforts have been for naught.

Thanks to all the Bikies that have given me support of various kinds
throughout the years, and especially those that have supported me while I
ran and served as alder. You have no idea how much your support - financial,
volunteer time, your ideas, or even just kind words - has meant to me.

Robbie
