The SW trail from Commonwealth to Breeze Terrace is scheduled to be closed Feb. 2-3. Quite a number of bike commuters use that trail in winter, and depend on it to avoid the treacherously icy and rutted adjacent streets. Assuming the closure is truly necessary, the city and/or contractors should ensure that cyclists have a safe alternative. At a minimum, the following are necessary:

1. Mark the alternate route, and ensure that it is clear of ice and snow. Snow and ice need to be removed all the way to the curb. If there are frozen tire ruts in the street, that ice must be broken up and removed. This is extremely important: Not only does the traffic create these ruts, cyclists forced to ride on the street have an excellent chance of getting run over by a car if they fall.

2. The closures are scheduled from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM only. Cyclists may avoid the closure by commuting earlier and later, but only if the closures adhere to the schedule. We're not going to be happy if the trail is still closed at 4:30.
