There is a retirement party for
                     City Engineer Larry Nelson

                          Thursday, July 16
                          Noon to 3:00 p.m.
                    Engineering Service Building
                          1600 Emil Street

Larry has worked for the City of 43 years.

I know that Larry has upset some of you on this list because he has promoted
new and
sometimes expanded infrastructure for the motor vehicle, but in my opinion he
has done
more for promoting, implementing and improving bicycle infrastructure in the
the City of
Madison in the last 15 years than anyone else ever has in Madison now and in
the past.

Unless the biking community has full support and will of the city engineer
and/or director of
public works not much will get built in any community. Larry has done it.
Since he assumed
fuller leadership in the early 1990's more has been built for bikes than all
past years.

*   The Isthmus Path
*   Wingra Path
*   Yahara Path
* Starkweather Paths and Bridge (with more to come)
* Southwest Commuter Path and Bridge over the Beltline
*   The Missing Link
* Improvement and widening of existing paths
*   The Nobby Trail Connection
* Path extensions on the Eastside
* Bike Lanes on East Washington
* Bike Lanes on West Washington
* Bike lanes on North Park
*   and so much more...

... with more transportation paths and bike lanes in the works.

I hope that some of you can find time to join Larry's retirement celebration
and thank him for
what he has done for the biking community.

Mike Rewey
