Since Larry is on this list, I am going to publicly say that I came to
appreciate Larry and our Engineering Dept after I became alder. In addition
to the projects Mike listed, I have also been impressed by the innovative
solutions to building bike/ped infrastructure so that it works for
non-motorized transportation. Little by little, piece by piece, the network
is being built.

Take a look at the engineering solutions along the Missing Link and SW Path:
abutments where space and grade would normally restrict a path, on/off ramps
that work, underpasses and bike/ped interchanges (East Campus Mall & the
Missing Link), etc.

Although I still cringe at the size and price tag of the infamous S&M
Intersection (Mineral Point Rd - aka Cty Hwy S & Junction Rd - aka Cty Hwy
M), the bike and pedestrian solutions are as good as you are likely to find
in the US. Larry has encouraged his staff to find solutions on this project
and many others.

In addition, we can thank Larry (or his staff?) for being ready to go with
the Starkweather Creek overpass of Aberg. Because the preliminary design and
engineering as done, we were able to get stimulus money for that project.
Many communities around the state and US weren't ready with bike/ped
projects that qualifies. The same goes for the Cannonball overpass of the
Beltline. Money was put in the city budget last fall to get the designs
done. This was in anticipation that federal money was going to be available,
and therefore maybe the project will be ready for Stimulus Money - Part 2.

I still have issues with the priorities of our transportation system, but
that is not entirely on the shoulders of the Engineering Dept.

Bike Walk Madison has already spoken to the Mayor about how important it
will be to have a City Engineer and Public Works Director (that could be two
positions or one) that understands biking and walking needs, and is ready to
design facilities that are as easy (or easier?) for non-motorized users to
negotiate as those in cars. Many on this list may be surprised to know how
many times I ran into to Larry biking around town, checking things out. It's
much easier to design a transportation system that works for bicyclists if
you actually ride a bike.

So, thanks, Larry! Despite our past disagreements, I'm going to miss you.
