I like the Transportation Alternatives flyer, since it's pro-bike and
reasonable. Most of what we hear about bikes and traffic laws comes in
the form of a lecture or a scolding, both of which are likely to get
ignored.

The "Modest Proposal" makes general sense, but it should be noted that a
lot of his descriptions of cycling culture apply to New York more than
Madison. We're a lot less confrontational around here, perhaps because
there are not so many of us per square foot.

I think that people should recognize, perhaps, that bikers in Madison are
a lot more careful and law-abiding than our stereotype would suggest --
certainly more than in a lot of cities.

The City Room blog on the nytimes.com website had this to say about us:

"In general, there is a certain lawlessness to the city’s paths that would
be shocking to riders from, say, Madison, Wis., who tend to display a
Teutonic fidelity to hand signals."

(The full posting is at:
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/21/bless-the-cyclist-on-your-left/?scp=1&sq=blessing%20bicycles&st=Search.
It describes the annual Blessing of the Bikes at the Cathedral of St.
John the Divine, and goes on to discuss the ways in which bikes sin, and
are sinned against. )
