Related Links Bicyclists riding without lights after dark Wednesday night got a pleasant surprise when stopped by Madison police: lights instead of tickets. Instead of $76.20 citations for not having proper lighting, the bicyclists received $35 worth of front and rear lights, along with a good talking-to about safety. The lights were donated by local bike accessories maker Planet Bike. It's a new safety campaign from the Madison Police Department called Operation Illumination, spearheaded by Officer Chris Masterson. "Everyone we stopped knew why we were stopping them and some were pretty bummed out," Masterson said in a news release. "That was until we gave them a set of lights." Several officers from the central police district, as well as community police team officers, stationed themselves on bike paths Wednesday night, including the popular path behind the Kohl Center, stopping bikers without lights. Within an hour, the officers were all out of the 50 light sets. While bikers talked with the officers about safety, the community police team installed the lights on bikes. Masterson said he'll do another Operation Illumination next spring if sufficient donations come in.
