Interesting topic...thanks for forwarding! At $4 and potentially
growing..driving a car will put more of us in a lower eco position! If there
was
a way to post how much someone who commutes saves a week...guessing there is
data samples already out there....that would be cool...or taking public
transit...and how much weight they lose, better they feel etc.... marketing the
bike as a great way to move around..most of the year here anyway...and how much
it saves would be good.
Also, speaking of marketing..and ahem, politics...if you don't already know
about it...two Facebook groups (feel free to join and invite more friends!),
"Bikes" and "Bikers Against Walker's Budget" have formed and have been protest
riding around the Capitol Square from 5-7pm the last few months...we now
concentrate on Friday's and its a very cathartic way to bond over the bike in a
very important cause. Often times Brian Zweiful brings the coolest bob
trailer/cooler boombox ever constructed and we've had crowds approaching
70....we get a lot of support of protestors walking the square, have had nice
chats with several state senators and assembly reps and others....I even had a
brief chat with Glen Grothman during the height of tension...last Friday we all
gave Senator Risser a big shout out and he came over and hung with the
assembled
protestors at the top of State Street and the Square. The battle is not over
for a better Wisconsin..the Budgetary prioirites of the current admin and their
supporters will set back not only cycling....but many other important quality
of
life factors in our state.

I glanced at that section of the report. They speculated that folks in lower
socio economic groups use bikes more for utilitarian reasons while those in
higher income groups bicycle more for recreation and exercise. No data to back
up that idea.
I have also seen speculation that non white groups don’t bicycle as much
because
the bicycle is seen as a symbol of poverty while driving an automobile is seen
as a sign of becoming middle class. Again, I haven’t seen any data to back up
this notion so I don’t know if there is anything to it or it is just pop
sociology.

Anyone read the full report to see if there is any discussion re: more "why's"
on the differences of cycling participation vs relative composition of various
groups? Is it in part that some groups tend overall to live closer to their
destinations and walk or use bus systems?
