It's a fair question and one that would be helpful to ask at a public
meeting so that others can hear the answer...bikers, vehicle operators, and
those of us who bike and operate a motor vehicle.

I think that these "protected bike lanes" or "buffered bike lanes" are going
to be pretty important to entice new bike commuters who are not convinced to
ride on collector and arterial streets. The design is evolving and we can
use the capacity of those arterial streets, such as Segoe, which have excess
capacity.

We also need to capitalize on opportunities to inform motor vehicle
operators, many of whom took their drivers training and tests prior to 1960,
of these new markings.

I am really looking forward to the installation of bike lanes on Hammersley
Road, scheduled for next month. These lanes will inform the vehicle
operators that Hammersley has two lanes for motor vehicles and two lanes for
bike lanes. One side will be have a bike/parking lane.

Lane Extension

I don't mean for it to be counterproductive. I'm a year-round bike
commuter. I also sometimes drive a car on Segoe. And I'm pretty sure
I'm not the only one who sometimes drives this street who is honestly
confused as to the proper driver behavior at this intersection.
Asking a list, say, devoted to driving a car would probably give me a
"sure, why couldn't you sit in the bike lane?" response. I thought
folks here might have a more insightful (read "correct") answer.

My apologies if that's counterproductive.
