Only in Iowa County (which I recently and thankfully moved out of in favor of bike-friendly Fitchburg) would a highway commissioner with no legal experience be delegated to do a job that requires a lawyer. I've read his proposed ordinance and it will be thrown out first time it is challenged in court. It doesn't even define what an "event" is. We had a meeting with a pro bono bicycling lawyer some time ago re Town of Vermont efforts to impose restrictions on bicycling (Bombay's Wright Stuff Century) and maybe it's time to do that again, just in case. By the way, the Iowa County Sheriff, who I know somewhat personally and think is a guy with good intentions, is copied in. He has to try to enforce the nonsense the Iowa County highway commissioner (also copied in- so's the chair of the county board, outside of this list because it's a stup[id listserfve ) and board comes up with. And this is simply not enforceable.

Got the email below from Bike Fed. Short version: Iowa County is considering requiring a permit for activities that will include all bike (and motorcycle) tours, rallies, club rides, charity rides, etc.

Please tell them this is a bad idea. I told them it was stupid to send away all these events that bring so many people - with their wallets open - to the communities of Iowa County.

If a proposed ordinance regulating bicycle and motorcycle rides in Iowa County passes, it may mean the end of some of Wisconsin's favorite organized rides in the Driftless region, including the USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championship, Bombay Bicycle Club's Wright Stuff Century, BREW tour, the Dairyland Dare, GRABAAR, the Horribly Hilly Hundreds, and even the weekly group rides.
