Since 2015, Dirk has been working with other Berliners to make their city more bicycle friendly - especially for those who want to bicycle, but don't feel safe in traffic. The Berlin Bicycle Referendum formulated 10 Goals and packed them into a law with which they initiated the process towards a people's referendum in the federal state of Berlin. Although it never came to a referendum, the immense support the people of Berlin showed for the Bicycle Referendum and intensive citizen campaigning led to the passing of Germany's first bicycle law in July of 2018, less than three years after the initiative went public with the proposal. Changing Cities is now focusing on getting the contents of the bicycle law implemented in Berlin, as well as supporting cities throughout Germany who want to pursue a similar path to make their cities more bike-friendly. (Four cities, Bamberg, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and Kassel have successfully taken at least the first step, with many more on the way.) Dirk's day job is as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam, where he researches the application of inclusive politics for sustainability transformations. ----------
