_acme-challenge CNAME whatever.name.you.want.here. will work provided there is no other records, including other CNAMEs, at _acme-challenge.
If you want more help post *actual* response unmodified. There are lots of different ways to configure servers and what may look like a error when checking isn’t anything more than a misunderstanding of how the DNS works.
