Hi,
There is a new paper on automatic acoustic monitoring of 87 species using
automatic recording units. The data and the list of species can be downloaded
from here:
http://www.kaggle.com/c/multilabel-bird-species-classification-nips2013
An open access paper on this dataset can be found here:
http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0096936

The conclusion is that nowadays, for a medium set of species (but far larger
than a couple of years ago) automatic acoustic monitoring of
birds-insects-amphibians can achieve high-scores in degraded environments.

Kind regards
Dr. Potamitis Ilyas
