At 5:00pm, Thursday, April 10th, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless
an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

Just when we thought winter was over...

Significant snow falls limited the number of migrants
and reports this past week. Perhaps the most
interesting report was of a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH seen
at Shoreacres/Paletta Park. Unfortunately, the bird
was in bad shape on Tuesday has not been reported
since. Other birds reported from Shoreacres include
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, FIELD SPARROW, BROWN
CREEPER, WINTER WREN, NORTHERN FLICKER, KILLDEER, and
CEDAR WAXWING.

Elsewhere, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK,
HOODED MERGANSER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, BUFFLEHEAD,
GREATER SCAUP, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, and an OSPREY
were reported from Spencer Smith Park in Burlington,
AMERICAN PIPIT, RED-NECKED GREBE, and HORNED GREBE
were seen at Bronte Harbour, and a CASPIAN TERN made a
brief appearance at Jordan Harbour.

Out of town, a BALD EAGLE was seen at Dunville, a
HARLEQUIN DUCK was at Fort Erie, COMMON RAVEN and
HORNED GREBE were reported from the Niagara River, and
GLAUCOUS GULL, ICELAND GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL,
RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN PIPIT, SAVANNAH SPARROW,
MERLIN, and COMMON SNIPE were seen at Turkey Point.

There were some great yard reports this week,
including NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and HOUSE FINCH in
Burlington, AMERICAN WOODCOCK on Northshore Boulevard,
also in Burlington, and CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN,
SONG SPARROW, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, FOX SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY
WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER,
and WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH in Mineral Springs.

The weather can only get better from here on in (I
hope), so be sure to let us know about your sightings
this week. Leave your name, telephone number, as well
as the time and date of your call. Sightings can also
be reported by e-mail.

GOOD BIRDING!
